Random Thoughts of Here & There # 135
The first Artist of the Month luncheon of the school year was held last week at the Chippewa Club in Iron Mountain. Sponsored by the Association of Student Artists, the program is now in its 16th year of showcasing outstanding student art work. Student artists honored at the luncheon included Jamie Vandenberg of Niagara, Dan Mitchell of Iron Mountain, Cari Dulin of Kingsford, Hilarie Thoune, Abigail Kennard, and Jalissa Haugen of North Dickinson, Kayla Halvas of Norway, and Stephanie Stepien of Pembine and their work is currently on display in the lobby of the Niagara office of Forward Financial Credit Union. This was the first year that Pembine High School has been a part of the program. Niagara runners-up included Brianna Zychowski, 2nd place, Samantha Henderson, 3rd place, and Sarah DePas and Bobbie Parent received honorable mention...

Considering the state of the American economy, the following seems like a very good and timely idea. Area seventh grade students are benefiting from a new Junior Achievement program that has been introduced this fall. The program helps students become more financially literate by teaching them about personal finance and the free enterprise system. Local sponsors of the program include the Niagara Lions Club as well as the Kiwanis, Rotary, and Zonta clubs of Iron Mountain. The program is offered once a week for six weeks and Trisha Peterson and Pauline Werner are serving as local instructors…

The Niagara volleyball team and the Peshtigo football team recently were named recipients of the first M&O Conference Team Sportsmanship Awards. They were chosen in a vote by conference coaches and players and members of the winning teams each received a t-shirt reading “M&O Sportsmanship begins with ME.” Congratulations to the players and coaches Carol St. Arnauld and Jennifer Curran…

All-conference football and volleyball teams have been announced. In volleyball, Niagara’s Jamie Vandenberg was a First Team choice and also repeated as M&O Conference Player of the Year. Senior Brianna Zychowski received honorable mention. In football, seniors Taylor Ziolkowski and Ben Potter were two-way selections both being named to the First Team on offense and defense as guards and linebackers. Senior Daniel Parent was a First Team choice on defense and as a punter and was a Second Team choice at quarterback. Seniors Tim Brasure made the First Team as a defensive lineman, senior Ryan Rocque at defensive end, and senior Ben McClellan made the First Team honor squad as an offensive lineman. Senior Andrew Janczy was a First Team selection on offense as a back. Junior back Adam Stankevich was a Second Team selection on both offense and defense while senior Steve Verdegan (offensive lineman) and Alex Taylor (defensive back) received honorable mention. Taylor Ziolkowski was named “Defensive Player of the Year.” Florence’s Jacob Church was honored as the “Offensive Player of the Year” and the Bobcats Joe Ferris was the “Coach of the Year”…

Prior to the Northern Elite Predators last playoff game at Fond du Lac, students in grades 7-12 from Goodman, Pembine, and Niagara joined together in the Niagara gymnasium for the first-ever joint pep rally of students from the three schools. This went over so well that similar special rallies may be held in the future...

The 2009 Niagara Lions Club Raffle Calendars are now on sale for only $10.00 and winners are drawn for every day of the year. $5,400 in prizes will be awarded with $10.00 for Monday through Saturday, $20.00 for Sundays, and $100.00 for holidays. Calendars are available from Lions members in Niagara and Goodman-Armstrong Creek, and at several local businesses including Doug’s Hilltop Lanes and Forward Financial Credit Union. The Niagara Lions Club also will sponsor another Texas Hold’em Poker tournament. This one will be held on Saturday, December 13, with the site and time to be announced soon…

Can’t believe I’ve been writing this column for over two-and-a-half years now. In addition to those who read it in the paper, the column also goes out via email. When I started it, I sent it out to about a dozen family members and friends but now it goes out weekly to nearly one hundred around the nation and the number keeps growing weekly. The number is too large to include in a single email group so I manually have to send it out in three separate mailings. Oh well, it keeps me busy…
